Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is something we have only had a very few of: an original German WWII Schutzstaffel (SS) typewriter! And this is also the much harder to find "Model 8", made by OLYMPIA BÜROMASCHINENWERKE AG. ERFURT (Olympia Office Machine Works Co), in Erfurt Germany, as noted on the front of the typewriter. To the far right is the MOD. 8 designation, and there is also the script logo Olympia on the typewriter itself, which is also marked with serial number 365962 on the rear right upper frame. This is a bit hard to get a good photograph of, as it is under some of the mechanisms on the typewriter. Consulting listings online, this indicates production most likely in 1940, or possibly 1941, right during the beginning of the war.
The Model 8 typewriter is definitely a "heavy duty" type, much more so than the usual "ROBUST" models we see from Olympia. The typewriter itself weighs a substantial 36lbs, and measures 15 ½"W x 14"D x 10 ½"H. It seems to be mostly functional, but there is definitely surface oxidation in some areas, and it is long overdue for a servicing. The original ribbon that came with it is falling apart, and also definitely needs replacement.
Now, the question most have is "what makes this an SS typewriter?". On this example, the key farthest to the upper left, which would normally be the number "1", is instead the double Sig rune emblem of the SS: ᛋᛋ. The key bar itself has this on it, and it is definitely the original one. Usually we see this as a "shift" symbol, but in this case it is the regular symbol, with ";" being the shift character. This also means that there is not a number "1" character, so we assume they would have used an uppercase i or lowercase L in its place. Very few of these survived the war intact, as most were modified for use post war with replacement of the key and striker.
This is an excellent opportunity to own a rare piece of military office equipment, still in very nice condition. Ready to add to your collection and display!
