Original Item: Only One Available. Thi is an exceptionally interesting and rare German WWII Luftwaffe Flight Branch enlisted / NCO Schirmmütze visor cap with a fantastic attribution to one of the shortest-lived Luftwaffe units of the pre-war expansion period: Zerstörergeschwader 143 (ZG 143), or “Destroyer Squadron 143.”
While Luftwaffe visor caps are highly collectible on their own, surviving examples with identifiable unit markings are significantly more desirable, especially when connected to a formation with such a brief service history. Zerstörergeschwader 143 officially existed for only four months, from January 1, 1939 until May 1, 1939. Formed from elements of Jagdgeschwader 143, the unit consisted of only one group before being redesignated as Zerstörergeschwader 52.
The interior unit marking is located beneath the sweatband, exactly where Luftwaffe ownership and unit markings are expected to be found, and is correctly marked:
I. / Z.G.143
This indicates assignment to the first Gruppe of Zerstörergeschwader 143, making this a particularly fascinating example with excellent research potential.
Even without the rare unit attribution, this is a wonderful original Luftwaffe Flight Branch visor cap with the highly desirable “crushed” or saddle-form appearance. This distinctive shape was achieved by removing the internal crown support stiffener, creating a more relaxed field appearance often favored by wartime personnel. Original crusher-style caps have long been especially sought after by collectors due to their classic combat-era look.
The cap is constructed from high quality Luftwaffe blue-gray Fliegerblau (“Flyer’s Blue”) whipcord wool with a wide black wool cap band. It features three rows of goldgelb (gold-yellow) Waffenfarbe piping, identifying the Flight Branch. This branch color was associated with Luftwaffe aviation personnel, including flying troops, ground aviation personnel, and Fallschirmjäger (paratrooper) units.
The exterior retains its correct original insignia, including a detailed aluminum Luftwaffe eagle mounted on the front peak and an aluminum oak leaf wreath with stylized wings surrounding the painted national tri-color cockade. The insignia remains in excellent condition, retaining an attractive bright appearance with only minor age-related wear to the painted surfaces.
The black leather dual-buckle chinstrap identifies this as an enlisted / NCO example and remains attached to the original black lacquered side buttons. The leather displays the expected age checking commonly found on original patent leather components from this period, giving it a more subdued appearance today.
The visor is the classic glossy black vulcanfibre construction with stitched faux leather edge trim and a checkered green underside. It shows expected age-related crazing, checking, and some softening of the finish from age. Portions of the edge trim show wear and loss, but the visor remains securely attached to the body of the cap.
The interior is lined with brown service cloth material, showing staining and evidence of actual use. The original celluloid sweat shield diamond remains partially intact, though it displays tearing and some missing stitching. A maker logo is still present beneath the shield, but unfortunately it is too worn to identify.
The size marking remains clearly visible:
58 1/2
The light gray leather sweatband remains in very good condition, displaying honest wear consistent with service use. As commonly encountered on surviving examples, the original rubber forehead pad behind the perforations is no longer present.
Overall, the cap remains in very good condition with excellent display appeal. The Luftwaffe blue-gray color remains strong, the branch piping is attractive, and importantly, there is no significant moth damage, a common issue with wool German visor caps of this era.
This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire not only a desirable Luftwaffe Flight Branch crusher-style Schirmmütze, but one with a rare documented connection to the extremely short-lived Zerstörergeschwader 143. Its combination of unit attribution, classic crushed form, strong condition, and research potential makes it a standout example.
Ready for further research and display.
The German Schirmmütze Visor Cap:
The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
