Original German WWII RAD through Heer Army Service Personal Photo Album - 105 Photos

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind-set. Here we have a wonderful personal photo album, with what looks to be mostly made up of personal photographs, with some book prints and professional photographs / post cards mixed in. It is contained in a lovely textured red leatherette cover, secured at the spine by the usual rayon tie. The album measures approximately 12 1/4” x 8 3/4”.

A total of 105 photographs fill the pages of this album, making it a treasure-trove of images taken from the viewpoint of a young, patriotic German soldier. These are contained on 9 pages, which are not captioned, though it looks like originally it may have had twice as many pages. Most photographs are glued directly to the pages, with a few using corner attachments, and most pages are separated by "spiderweb" pattern "onion skin" separators.

The photos show the progression of the owner from being a volunteer in the RAD Reich Labor Corps to being an enlisted soldier in the Heer Army Infantry. This was a very common thing, as the war progressed the needs of the country changed from construction to combat.

Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the Second World War, now that almost eighty years have passed.

The older albums such as these usually withstand the ravages of time. The leather or fabric covers may wear, but the pages stay well intact. The black paper albums of the early 20th century are more fragile, while the glue from magnetic albums can damage photographs. And, as with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment.
