Original German WWII POW Hand Carved Eagle Head from Camp Aliceville in Alabama

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely hand carved Eagle's Head on a wood backing, carved by a German P.O.W. kept at Camp Aliceville in Aliceville, Alabama. This World War II era prisoner of war (POW) camp began construction in August 1942, received its first prisoners in June 1943, and it shut down in September 1945. It was the largest World War II POW camp in the Southeastern United States, holding between 2,000 and 12,000 German prisoners at any one time.

It was one of these soldiers that carved this box, as per the writing on the back:

Given to
My Father
Made by
German Prisoner
Camp Aliceville, Alabama

The carved Eagle's head is very well executed, with lots of detail and a good sense of scale. It measures about 7 1/2" wide x 6" tall, and does not look to have been glued onto the backing.

The whole piece of wood measures approximately 9 3/4"W x10"D x 1 3/4" at the widest point, and is hand carved from stained hardwood. There is a hanger loop on the back, though we do not know if this was installed by the POW or later.

A great piece of military history, ready to add to your collection! P.O.W. made items are always very desirable and hard to find on the market.
