  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an extremely scarce Hebel German flare pistol that was modified by the German police in 1936 by the addition of bore sleeve, sights and fore-stock for the shooting of tear gas cartridges. The cartridge casing was the same diameter of standard German flare pistols, 26.5mm, but it contained a tear gas round launched through the slightly smaller bore diameter. The sights and fore-stock assisted accuracy, though some pieces had only the fixed sights.

The pistol appears to have had all original markings scrubbed, with serial 29 347 stamped on the side, which is also stamped on the inside of the side plate and many other components. There is also a small Waffenamt Eagle stamp with just the letter c under it, which is generally accepted to be from the German Police inspection office.

The pistol breaks open correctly with the ejector presenting, however the connector between the hammer and the mainspring is broken / missing, so it cannot be cocked and dry fired. The hammer and other components look to be fully intact, so it just needs this small part for the action to cycle again.

This is a very interesting converted pistol meant for riot control by German police, the first we have ever offered and only the second we have ever seen. Comes ready for further research and display.

On 4 June 1936, the use of tear gas guns was introduced to the Prussian Schutzpolizei (Protection Police) in major cities across Germany. A grenade was adopted, as well as two types of cartridges to be fired from tear gas guns, one cartridge for closed rooms and the other for open areas along with the grenade. Type A cartridges were to be fired from Hebel model flare guns modified with fore-stock and a simple sight system.

A bore liner was installed to handle the special gas cartridge. The B cartridge could be fired from the flare pistol. One modified pistol was to be issued to each emergency squad in major cities, apportioning to each twenty type A shells and ten type B and 10 grenades
