Original German WWII Police Officer's Degen Dress Sword by Paul Weyersberg with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine vintage World War II German Police Officer's Degen (Épée) Dress Sword, made by the well-known Solingen-based firm of Paul Weyersberg & Co.. It is still in very good condition, looking to have seen moderate use at formal events. The nickel plating throughout the steel fittings and the "D" guard is still present, with a lovely lightly oxidized patina. There are some areas of wear through on the edges, which has allowed the base metal to rust just a bit.

The pommel cap has excellent serrations and no sign of improper removal. The "D" guard is in wonderful condition, ending in the the usual teardrop quillon. The ferrule is crisp, decorated with six standing oak leaves separated by acorns. The ebony grip is in very good condition, showing moderate overall wear and what looks to possibly be residue from past polishing. It is still tightly wrapped with aluminum wire and with a fine cover plate on the reverse. The inset Police Civic eagle insignia is also in fine condition, and looks to be aluminum, with antiquing in the recesses of the design. There are no cracks, chips, or other damage to the wood of the grip.

The 31 inch long nickel plated blade is in very good condition, with just a few dents on the unsharpened factory edge. The plating has oxidized a bit, and there are scattered areas where it has eroded or flaked away, allowing the steel of the blade to oxidizes. Some such areas were then cleaned / polished, removing the oxidation but also probably some of the plating. There is some light runner wear and scratching, but it still looks very nice. It has a standard single fuller, unlike the double fuller we have seen on some other examples. The original leather blade buffer is present on top of the cross guard, showing some wear from use and age.

This lovely example was made by Paul Weyersberg & Co. of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is marked with PAUL WEYERSBERG & Co. / SOLINGEN in double ovals around the firms trademark "Sword-and-Wreath" logo, which was the only marking they used during the Third Reich era. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. For more information please see GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS by J. Anthony Carter.

The scabbard is in very good condition, with a very minor "dog leg" bend near the center, which does not interfere with sheathing the blade at all. There is no denting around it, and the paint is not degraded, so it almost looks like it was from original manufacture. The black enamel finish on the steel body of the scabbard is retained at over 95%, still shiny in most areas, with light wear and chipping. The lower scabbard mount has a decorative pattern of lines, and retains much of the the nickel plate, showing some light oxidation. Both flush mount retaining screws are still present. The upper mount is in the "Wotan's Knot" configuration, which is also nickel plated. It is in very good condition, showing some oxidation and wear, especially on the top where it contacts the leather blade buffer. It still has both retaining screws still present inside of the "knot" on both sides.

These police swords are quite rare and desirable, and we have only had a handful previously. Ready to add to your collection and display!
