Original German WWII Police NCO's Degen Dress Sword by Paul Weyersberg with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine vintage World War II German Police NCO's Degen (Épée) Dress Sword, made by the well-known Solingen-based firm of Paul Weyersberg & Co.. While we have had multiple examples of the Officer's version of the Police Degen, this is only the second NCO version that we have had, and they appear to be relatively rare. It is still in very good condition, looking to have seen only light use at formal events. The nickel plating throughout the steel fittings and the "D" guard is still present, with a lovely lightly oxidized patina. There are some areas of wear through on the edges, which has allowed the base metal to rust just a bit.

The pommel cap is the correct smooth type for an NCO sword (Officer's were serrated), and shows no signs of removal. The "D" guard is in wonderful condition, ending in the the usual teardrop quillon. The ferrule is crisp, decorated with six standing oak leaves separated by acorns. The ebony grip is in very good condition, showing light overall wear, and no cracking, chipping, or other damage. There is no wrapping, another appointment only seen on the officer's version. The inset Police Civic eagle insignia is also in fine condition, and looks to be aluminum, with antiquing in the recesses of the design. The hilt is a bit loose on the tang, as there is not really any way to tighten it when the wood shrinks

The 31 1/2 inch long matte finished carbon steel blade is in excellent condition, showing no dents on the edge or major wear, and has correctly never been sharpened. We cannot really see any oxidation on the blade, and the tip is still in great shape, with no dents or bends. We had considered that it might be stainless steel, but we have not been able to find any information regarding that. The original leather blade buffer is present on top of the cross guard, showing some wear from use and age.

This lovely example was made by Paul Weyersberg & Co. of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the simplified address marking inside an oval:

PAUL WEYERSBERG
& Co.
SOLINGEN

This style of logo was seen on Police Bayonets made during the Third Reich period, as well as NCO Police Degen Swords. This company was one of many in Solingen owned by members of the Weyersberg family. The company survived the war, but ceased production in 1955. For more information please see GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS by J. Anthony Carter.

The scabbard is in very good condition, with the steel shell straight and free of bends and dents, just how we like to see them. The black enamel finish on the steel body of the scabbard is retained at over 95%, still shiny in most areas, with light wear and chipping. There is no mount on the drag end of the scabbard as there would be on the officer version, while the upper mount is in the "Wotan's Knot" configuration, which is nickel plated steel. It is in very good condition, showing some minor oxidation, especially on the top where it contacts the leather blade buffer. It still has both retaining screws still present inside of the "knot" on both sides. The scabbard also retains the hanger ring, and the rectangular loop for "hitching up" the sword is present as well.

These police swords are quite rare and desirable, and this is the first NCO type that we can remember having! Ready to add to your collection and display!
