  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original German WWII black leather police pistol holster manufactured by Schambach & Co. of Berlin and dated 1942. It is the compact police pattern intended for a small 7.65mm service pistol and is suitable for pistols in the Walther PPK size class.

The holster is constructed from blackened leather with a rounded protective flap, stitched pistol body, separate narrow magazine pocket at the front, and a broad stitched belt loop on the reverse. The front flap is secured by a leather closure strap engaging a metal stud. Beneath the flap is the impressed manufacturer and date marking:

    SCHAMBACH & CO.
    BERLIN
    1942

Directly below is the German police acceptance eagle over B marking. The leather is additionally numbered 347472, with the number hand-inscribed on the interior/reverse area. Its precise administrative or ownership significance cannot be established, and it should not be interpreted as a matching pistol serial number without additional evidence.

The holster remains in good service-used condition, with substantial wear consistent with wartime use and later storage. The leather shows widespread surface creasing, scuffing, finish loss, and localized brown exposure where the black finish has worn through. The flap retains considerable flexibility but exhibits pronounced creasing and age-related wrinkling. The closure strap, magazine pouch, and rear belt loop remain present, with wear and distortion from use. Stitching is largely retained throughout, while the exposed metal fittings show oxidation and age toning. The impressed maker, date, and police markings remain readily legible.

    Historical Context

The Walther PP (Polizeipistole) was introduced in 1929 as a compact, double-action semiautomatic pistol intended primarily for police service. Its success led to the development of the smaller PPK (Polizeipistole Kriminal), introduced in 1931. The PPK's reduced dimensions made it particularly practical for plainclothes officers, detectives, and other personnel who required a concealable sidearm. Both models became widely used by German police and government officials during the 1930s and throughout WWII.

The PPK was most commonly chambered in 7.65mm Browning (.32 ACP), a cartridge already well established in European police and civilian service. Its relatively small dimensions permitted the use of compact leather holsters, which offered secure retention and convenient belt carry. German police also employed other 7.65mm pistols, including models manufactured by Mauser and J. P. Sauer & Sohn, and several holster patterns were designed to accommodate handguns of similar dimensions.

The holster's enclosed flap protected the pistol during daily service, while the separate front pocket provided storage for a spare magazine. A broad leather loop on the reverse allowed the holster to be carried on the service belt, and the metal stud closure provided a straightforward means of securing the weapon. This arrangement was well suited to uniformed police duties, where the pistol needed to remain protected and readily accessible throughout the working day.

German police equipment underwent significant changes during the 1930s as the country's various police organizations came under increasingly centralized control. In June 1936, Heinrich Himmler was appointed Chief of the German Police, and the uniformed police forces were subsequently organized under the Hauptamt Ordnungspolizei, or Main Office of the Order Police. This organization included the Schutzpolizei, responsible primarily for policing larger towns and cities, and the Gendarmerie, which served rural districts. The Kriminalpolizei, or Criminal Police, operated within the separate Security Police structure.

These organizations required substantial quantities of firearms and personal equipment. Leather goods manufacturers supplied pistol holsters, ammunition pouches, belts, and other accoutrements through police procurement arrangements. Schambach & Co. of Berlin was among the manufacturers producing leather pistol holsters during this period, with the firm's name and location impressed into the leather alongside the year of manufacture.

The German police acceptance eagle over B is an important feature of this holster. Police equipment was subject to inspection and acceptance procedures, with official markings applied to indicate that an item had been received through the appropriate procurement system. The 1942 manufacture date places this holster during a period when German police organizations were operating throughout the Reich and occupied Europe, performing domestic policing, security duties, and various wartime assignments. Order Police units also participated extensively in occupation enforcement, deportations, and mass killings, particularly in Eastern Europe.

The number 347472, separately inscribed into the leather, may represent an equipment inventory number, property designation, or association with an individually issued firearm. Such markings could be used to keep track of equipment assigned to individual personnel or maintained within police inventories. The number's precise purpose remains unidentified, although it provides an additional detail of the holster's service history.
