  • Original Item: One-of-a-kind-set. Here we have a wonderful personal photo album, measuring approximately 12 1/2” x 9 1/4” and covered with lovely multi-colored fabric. There is also a picture affixed to the front showing Waffen SS soldiers in parade formation, presumably taken at one of the many NSDAP events staged to instill national unity. There is unfortunately no information on the cover indicating who the owner of this album was.

A total of 114 photographs fill the 24 pages of this album (the last 10 are empty), making it a treasure-trove of images taken from the viewpoint of a young, patriotic German soldier. These are contained on pages, which are not captioned, and are separated by "spiderweb" pattern "onion skin" separators. All of the photos appear to be attached directly to the paper, and a few are loose inside the album.

The pictures filling the pages show a wide variety of scenes, including what look to be NSDAP political events, as well as many pictures of Heer Army soldiers in the field. We can also see some SA members in their "Coffee Can" caps, Kriegsmarine Sailors on some small vessels, and even some Luftwaffe members. We can see some photos showing bombed out / destroyed towns, though we do not know whether these are Western or Eastern front. Definitely a wide variety of different scenes with some great research potential!

Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the Second
World War, now that almost eighty years have passed.

The older albums such as these usually withstand the ravages of time. The leather or fabric covers may wear, but the pages stay well intact. The black paper albums of the early 20th century are more fragile, while the glue from magnetic albums can damage photographs. And, as with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment
