Original German WWII Officer Lion Head Sword Cut Down Fighting Knife by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a USGI European Theatre customized classic Lionhead German WWII Officer sword which was excellent cut down and modified to be a fighting knife.

The all brass hilt consists of a finely detailed lion head cat with oak leaf backstrap. The hand guard was cut away. The Lion is fitted with blood red faceted "jewel" eyes. Nice detail throughout his whiskers, chin, and muzzle. The handwork is beautifully rendered throughout this brass. The backstrap consists of raised out oak leaves with double leaves flowing into the side tabs. The "D" guard has raised out oak leafing as does the ferrule.

The crossguard has an open winged eagle which looks to the viewer's right. The breast area of this eagle, as well as the legs and the wreath enclosing the swas, have all been hand enhanced. The brass alloy hilt still has a good degree of the original gilded finish, making it very attractive.

The scabbard of this example is a custom leather production with securing strap and functional snap.

The grip is an outstanding black celluloid-over-wood base. It is wrapped with twisted wire, which is has three wraps on the top, and a single wrap on the other portions on the grip. The celluloid is in great condition,

The blade measures 8.75 inches. The reverse ricasso is stamped WKC under the company's trademark "Knights-Head" logo. Unfortunately the chappe/rainguard completely covers this area, so photographing the logo is impossible.

Overall a unique genuine war time fighting knife conversion, the only one we've ever encountered!
