Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. In 1940, the Reichskommissar (NSDAP Governor) of the occupied Netherlands, Seyss-Inquart, set up Winterhulp Nederland (Netherlands' Winter-Aid) modeled on the German example, Winterhilfswerk”. Through collections and raffles the organization raised money to help provide needy Dutch families with food and clothing. All other charitable organizations were banned.
These matches would have been given to the citizens who made a small donation to the Winterhulp. The matches themselves are in wonderful condition and do appear to still function. The matches appear to have been produced in Belgium and has Ganshoren printed on the back. Ganshoren is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium.
The front of the books have Verkocht Ten Bate Van Winterhulp printed on the front which translates to “Sold for the benefit of Winter Help”. All colors are still vibrant and able to be read.
