Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since that time to identify membership or function in various military and police organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used during the Third Reich.

This is a very nice example of a German WWII National Socialist War Victim's Care (NSKOV) Standard (Flag) Bearer's Gorget. These would be worn during parades and other political activities by the person bearing the NSKOV flag, which was quite a place of honor, hearkening back to earlier days, where the flag had more value than life.

The gorget is constructed of what looks to be plated non-magnetic alloy "heart" shaped backing plate, measuring about 4 3/4” across and 5 1/4” high. This is the same basic size and shape used for the SA and several other NSADAP organizational "flag bearer" gorgets. There is a large brass rayed star in the center, in the center of which which is the NSKOV emblem, which looks to be silver plated brass. It is the standard design: a canted Swas (hook cross) inside a circle, which is overlayed on the Iron Cross emblem. This is surrounded by an oval leaf, with a sword piercing the entire emblem. It is most likely held onto the main body with clips, covered by felt on the back.

The three hanger clips on the back are still intact, and retain most of their plating, with a bit of patination. The black felt on the back has detached partly from the gorget, and it looks like there were previous attempts to re-glue it. The gorget still has its original long hanging chain, which were often lost, and it is in very good condition.

These are among the hardest to find examples of German World War Two Gorgets. Ready to display!

The National Socialist War Victim's Care (Nationalsozialistische Kriegsopferversorgung or NSKOV) was a social welfare organization for seriously wounded veterans as well as frontline fighters of World War I. The NSKOV was established in 1934 and was affiliated to the NSDAP Party. The headquarters of the organization was in Kreuzberg, Berlin (at the time called the SW 68 district) and employed the architect Willy Muehlau to design cheap residential complexes for NSDAP war veterans. These complexes emerged some time between the late 1920s and early 1930s and are protected according to the City of Berlin's Denkmalliste (monument list).
