Original Item: Only One Available. The Volkssturm (people's storm) was a levée en masse national militia established by NSDAP Germany during the last months of World War II. It was set up by the National Socialist Party on the orders of Adolf H and established on 25 September 1944. It was staffed by conscripting males between the ages of 16 and 60 years who were not already serving in some military unit.
The Volkssturm comprised one of the final components of the total war promulgated by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, part of an NSDAP endeavor to overcome their enemies' military strength through force of will. Volkssturm units fought unsuccessful battles against Allied forces at the end of the war. On several occasions, its members participated in atrocities, accompanied by German civilians and the HJ, which were overseen by members of the SS or Gau leaders.
As a "last ditch" unit, they did not have any official uniforms, and period pictures show the members wearing a wide variety of paramilitary and civilian clothing. Some were even wearing their old WWI uniforms, and the only thing really necessary was the DEUTSCHER VOLKSSTURM / WEHRMACHT (German people's storm defense force) armband on the left sleeve. There were some basic ranks in the organization, but many members did not have them.
What we have here looks to be an NSKK or SA officer tunic, which was then used when they became a member of the Volkssturm force. It may not have even been the original owner that used it, as it may have been donated or taken when they formally joined the military earlier in the war. There is unfortunately not really any way to tell. The collar tabs and shoulder straps definitely look to be from an officer in the SA or NSKK. The shoulder straps should be for a person of the rank between Sturmführer to Hauptsturmführer, and the left collar tab has two strips of tresse at the bottom, with signs of three removed "pips", which would be correct for a Hauptsturmführer (Chief assault leader), equivalent to a Hauptmann (Captain). The Br.71 on the right side is probably for the 71st Brigade Staff, and the black and silver colors indicate the Berlin-Brandenburg Group. The rank pips were most likely removed to indicate that the uniform was no longer for some of of that rank in the SA or NSKK. Once they were in the Volkssturm any previous rank was irrelevant.
Aside from the insignia and Volkssturm armband, it really is a lovely example of an NSKK / SA tunic, in very good condition. Definitely lots of display and research potential here!
