The NSDAP or Nationalsozialistische Deutsche ArbeiterPartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), was originally founded in Munich as the DAP, Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (German Worker’s Party), on January 5TH 1919. When Adolf AH joined the DAP in the autumn of 1919 he was to reform what was basically a debating society into an active political party. Appointed as the first chairman of the party on July 29TH 1921, AH was to restructure it along para-military lines in a hierarchy.

This new NSDAP structure consisted of four ascending levels of government: the Ortsgruppenleitung (Local group leadership), the Kreisleitung (District leadership), the Gauleitung (Regional District leadership), and the Reichsleitung (National leadership). Each group was distinguished by a specific color of piping on the collar tabs and visor cap. From 1936 to 1939 in this scheme, light blue was for the Ortsgruppe level, black for Kreis level, burgundy red for Gau level, and gold yellow for the Reich level. After that the Kreis level changed to white piping.

This is an outstanding NSDAP Reichsleitung Gemeinschaftsleiter (Reich leadership, community leader) Political Leader’s Uniform set, including tunic, breeches, Mantel (greatcoat), and attached armbands.

The Brown Wool Mantel, usually called a greatcoat or overcoat, is constructed with an outer shell of heavy brown wool, and is definitely intended for the colder time of year. The collar is a brighter color and bears Reichsleitung Gemeinschaftsleiter collar tabs with red velvet backing piped in yellow/gold, and the collar itself is piped in the same color, indicating that the wearer was at the Reichsleitung (National leadership) level. The collar tabs bear a Reichsadler eagle at the top over four rank pips, indicating the NSDAP Political rank of Gemeinschaftsleiter (Community Leader). The left sleeve bears the correct Reichsleitung National Leadership Head Area Leader Armband, constructed of a red wool/cotton blend cloth with a central black swas on a white rayon field, all bordered by gold bullion thread. The golden oak leaf borders and piping are machine stitched to the band, and look great. The armband has the correct gold-yellow piping on the edge. The stitching for the armband appears newer and may be from resewing. There is also some scattering mothing to the red field of the armband.

It does also appear that some of the buttons have been resewn to the greatcoat recently, and the fabric used to sew them on does glow, but repairs are to be expected with cloth this old. It also looks like two of the buttons to the front are gone. The stitching of the armband to the sleeve is also a bit loose, so it may have been recently resewn as well. The greatcoat is in great condition overall but there is scattered staining to the exterior and the interior lining. Interestingly, there is a laundry tag in the greatcoat with the number 8449, matching a tag in the breeches, so this set appears to have always been together.

The camel brown wool twill tunic does not bear collar tabs, but has a yellow/gold piped collar, indicating that the wearer was at the Reichsleitung (National leadership) level. The front of the jacket features four pockets, with the upper two having scalloped flaps and the lower two square. All of the gold colored Reichsadler buttons are present: four for closing the garment, one each for the four front pockets, and two at the top of the rear vent. All look to be RZM code marked on the back. The uniform tunic is fully lined with gold colored rayon within, and there are no maker markings or RZM tags, so this was most likely a bespoke example, made for a high level local official.

Over the upper left pocket and on the pocket were originally fabric loops meant for the attachment of awards, but they are no longer present and awards will have to be pinned to the uniform. The tunic itself is in fair condition but there is heavy tearing of the material along the collar and the shoulders, with some heavy staining to the interior lining. There is also tearing in the lining along the top edge and near the armpit areas.

The matching camel brown twill wool pants are also present. They bear a three-button fly closure with buttons closing the tapered ankles of each pant leg. Two diagonal front pockets with buttoned flaps are present and one similar horizontal pocket is situated on the right rear. There is heavy tearing at the crotch which appears to have been repaired in the past, and there is also scattered staining and moth nipping to the exterior. One of the belt loops have torn off and the front closure has tearing as well. The breeches have certainly been with the tunic for a long time.

A fantastic uniform set that shows the great lengths that members of the NSDAP went to exert their own self-importance via ornate uniforms. Ready to research and display!
