Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice German WWII Funeral Sash, which unlike others we have had in the past is made from cotton fabric. We have seen these both in a double and single ended configuration, and this example is of the latter. These were displayed during funerals for members of the various NSDAP-related organizations, as well as soldiers. During the funeral they would often be draped over a wreath, and after burial were placed on top the plants and flowers placed over the grave. Typically they measured around 2 meters in length, and were double ended, with various organizations marked on the fabric. If it was a sash for a particular subordinate organization like the DAF, that emblem would appear on one end. Both ends would have a bullion fringe.

This example measures 37 1/2" x 7 1/8", and is a typical example, made from a red cotton body with a fringe next to one end. Just above this is a sewn-on swas emblem made from multiple pieces of cotton. printed oil cloth. The fringe is in good shape and the emblem shows some age toning but no major damage. The body of the sash does show wear, small tears, and staining consistent with use in service, particularly the unfringed end, which has staining about 5 inches into the sash. The sash also has the NSDAP group information printed on it in black letter typeface:

NSDAP.

Ortsgruppe Kulmbach-Blaich

The second line translates to "Local Group Kulmbach-Blaich", which is a region in northern Bavaria. It was most likely used at funerals for NSDAP members from that local group, and then was brought home by a USGI after the war.
