Original German WWII NSDAP National Socialist Party Transitional Pattern Flag Pole Finial "Topper" - Aluminum
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice WWII German National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - NSDAP) Flag Pole Finial or Topper (Fahnenstange Endstück) Eagle. This looks to be a transitional type between the first and second pattern. It is multi-piece construction, but made from cast or injection molded aluminum. It no longer has the socket and fittings to attach it to the pole, which is unfortunately where the markings for this type would have been. However the threaded hole on the bottom for the attachment rod is still present. Most likely the USGI who brought it back removed it quickly, as the socket itself would take far longer to remove. We received this "straight out of the woodwork", coming from an old USGI bring back college, untouched for decades.
The design is the standard NSDAP "Spread Wing" Reichsadler (National Eagle), which looks to its left, and is perched on a wreath, with a mobile/canted Swas (swas) in the center. It measures 7 1/2 inches tall and is 10 3/4 inches wide at the tips of the wings. There is quite a bit of detail to the design on this transitional type, more than seen on other examples. Close examination with a 16X magnifier shows very high quality construction consistent with wartime aluminum items. We have compared it to numerous different pole topper eagles, original and replica, and it doesn't really match any known pattern, making it a fantastic research opportunity.
These Flag Pole Finials are extremely hard to find, as most were destroyed or melted back down as scrap. This rare transitional example is in very nice condition, ready to add to any collection!
The National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, abbreviated NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the NSDAP Party, was a far-right political party in Germany that was active between 1920 and 1945, that created and supported the ideology of National Socialism. Its precursor, the German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei; DAP), existed from 1919 to 1920.
The NSDAP Party emerged from the German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post-World War I Germany. The party was created to draw workers away from communism and into völkisch nationalism. Initially, NSDAP political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois, and anti-capitalist rhetoric, although this was later downplayed to gain the support of business leaders, and in the 1930s the party's main focus shifted to anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist themes.
