Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good original German WWII NSDAP political pennant, or Wimpel, measuring approximately 11 3/4 x 21 inches. It is constructed from lightweight red cotton and is single sided, with a separately applied white cotton disk bearing a multi-piece black swas constructed from rayon moiré-type material. Two metal grommets are positioned at the upper and lower corners of the hoist, and reinforced stitching runs around the entire perimeter.

The red cotton body is relatively lightweight compared with the heavier material often encountered on larger flags intended for prolonged outdoor use. The white circular field is a separate piece of cotton sewn directly to the face of the pennant, while the central black swas is assembled from separate pieces of rayon moiré-type material rather than being printed directly onto the cloth. Period German political textiles are known with separately applied and sewn insignia of this general type.

The pennant is fitted with two grommets along the hoist edge for suspension, one at each corner, and the entire perimeter has been reinforced with stitching. There are no substantial corner reinforcement panels or other heavy-duty attachment features of the type often encountered on larger outdoor flags. Combined with its relatively lightweight construction and modest size, this suggests that the pennant may have been intended primarily for indoor, ceremonial, organizational, or short-duration display.

Condition is excellent overall, with very little evidence of extensive period use. There is a very small amount of staining, but the red cotton body, white disk, black applied insignia, grommets, and perimeter stitching all remain very well preserved. No major tears or significant material loss are noted.

The NSDAP developed from the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or DAP, founded in Munich in 1919. AH joined the DAP later that year, and in 1920 the organization was renamed the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or NSDAP. The black swas within a white disk on a red field became the party’s principal visual emblem and was subsequently used on a wide variety of flags, pennants, banners, armbands, and other political textiles.

By the Third Reich period, flags and pennants carrying the party emblem had become highly visible elements of political and organizational display. They appeared on public buildings, at meetings and rallies, in offices and party facilities, and during ceremonies and other organized events. The familiar red, white, and black color combination became one of the most recognizable visual symbols associated with the NSDAP.

This example is particularly appealing for its clean multi-piece construction, separately applied cotton disk and rayon moiré-type swas, surviving pair of suspension grommets, and lightly used condition. The minor staining is the principal condition consideration, while the strong stitching and well-preserved applied insignia leave the pennant substantially intact.
