  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original German WWII NSDAP First Pattern flag pole finial, or Fahnenspitze, complete with its globe ornament and lower mounting socket. Constructed from nickel plated brass alloy in the desirable early multi part configuration, it features the familiar spread wing Party eagle above an oak leaf wreath containing a canted hook cross. Complete examples retaining the intermediate globe and socket assembly make particularly impressive displays and show how these early finials were actually mounted to a flag pole.

The main finial depicts the standard NSDAP style Reichsadler, or National Eagle, with spread wings and the head turned to its right. The eagle is perched above an oak leaf wreath with a mobile, or canted, hook cross at the center. The early multi part construction and nickel plated finish are characteristic features associated with First Pattern NSDAP flag pole finials.

The eagle itself measures 7 inches tall and 8 3/16 inches wide across the tips of the wings.

Attached beneath the eagle is a 1 3/4 inch long steel rod. The upper threaded portion screws directly into the eagle, while the lower portion is left unthreaded. This rod passes through the hollow globe shaped ornament positioned beneath the finial, which has a central tube running through it. The lower alloy mounting socket then completes the assembly.

When fully assembled with the eagle, globe ornament, and socket in place, the complete finial measures 10 5/8 inches in overall height. The surviving multi component mounting arrangement is a particularly appealing feature, as many examples encountered today are missing one or more of these lower attachment pieces.

The main body is constructed from brass alloy with a nickel plated exterior finish. There is scattered oxidation to the plating on the eagle, together with only a few areas where wear has passed through the plating and exposed the brass base material beneath. The central hook cross does not appear to have ever received the black painted finish sometimes encountered on comparable examples.

Condition overall is very good. One wing has a slight bend, but there is no other noticeable deformation or major damage. The eagle retains a strong profile, the oak leaf wreath and central device remain well defined, and the globe ornament, steel attachment rod, and lower socket are all present.

For the collector of German WWII flags, political standards, or organizational display equipment, this is a particularly attractive early NSDAP finial. Its nickel plated brass construction, First Pattern spread wing eagle, complete globe ornament and socket assembly, impressive 10 5/8 inch assembled height, and strong surviving finish give it excellent visual presence. It would display especially well with an NSDAP flag or standard, period flag pole hardware collection, or advanced German political insignia display.

The National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei , abbreviated NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the NSDAP Party, was a far-right political party in Germany that was active between 1920 and 1945, that created and supported the ideology of National Socialism. Its precursor, the German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei; DAP), existed from 1919 to 1920.

The NSDAP Party emerged from the German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post-World War I Germany. The party was created to draw workers away from communism and into völkisch nationalism. Initially, NSDAP political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois, and anti-capitalist rhetoric, although this was later downplayed to gain the support of business leaders, and in the 1930s the party's main focus shifted to anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist themes.
