Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice service worn Genuine WWII German Kriegsmarine sailor's Tellermütze (Flat Cap), usually referred to as a Donald Duck hat. This basic design was popular worldwide, and used by many countries. These caps were worn by all Junior NCO's and enlisted men. It is made of Dark navy blue wool, and is fitted with a black silk cap tally machine embroidered with the title Kriegsmarine in oxidized bullion thread. The tally is affixed by braided thread in two places, as is standard. The front of the cap bears a national eagle composed of faded brass over a metal tri-color cockade with a felt insert over the ribbon.
The interior is complete with the original brown leather sweatband that is in good shape, showing moderate wear from service and some tearing near the rear. The celluloid plastic band stiffener underneath has degraded, cracked in places and pulled out from the stitching, mostly towards the rear. This style of cap has a removable crown, so the band was designed to be rather stiff, which helps hold on the top portion. This way the sailor would only have to buy one cap, and use different colors depending on the color uniform they were wearing.
The inside is lined with black fabric, and shows wear, with a faded maker marking over size JPM-B / 56. The underside of the sweatband has some ink stamps, one of which reads J.P. MOL BREDA / (HOLLAND), for a well-known Dutch maker of Kriegsmarine "composite" caps such as this, which can have the crown replaced.
Overall the cap is in very good cosmetic condition, with little sign of moth or other wear issues. The tally is in very good condition, and still looks to be full length. The main condition issue is the celluloid plastic band stiffener, previously mentioned.
