Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice service worn Genuine WWII German Kriegsmarine sailor's Tellermütze (Flat Cap), usually referred to as a Donald Duck hat. This example came to us complete with a lovely period photograph of a German Kriegsmarine sailor, which measures 5 3/8"H x 3 3/8"W. It has the correct metallic sheen that WWII period black and white photographs, and we are told that this is the owner of the cap. There is unfortunately no name on the cap or the photograph to link them, but the collector we purchased from said that they definitely go together.

This basic design of the "Donald Duck" cap was popular worldwide, and used by many countries. These caps were worn by all Junior NCO's and enlisted men. It is made of Dark navy blue wool, and is fitted with a black silk cap tally machine embroidered with the title Kriegsmarine in yellow thread. The tally is affixed by braided thread in two places at the rear, as is standard. The front of the cap bears a stickpin-style national eagle composed of brass over a metal tri-color cockade with a felt insert over the ribbon. The eagle is still quite shiny, however the silvering on the cockade has oxidized.

The interior is complete with the original blue / gray faux leather sweatband that is in very good shape with moderate wear, showing cracking and flaking to the finish. The inside is lined with blue / gray rayon. No size present on this cap, but it is believed to be 56-57cm ( 7-7 1/8 U.S. ).

Overall the cap is in very good condition, with a great service worn look. This was not a cap that spent the war in a depot. There are some stitched repairs on the side of the crown, as well as some light mothing on the top, which has only affected the fuzzy nap of the fabric.
