Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The National Socialist War Victim's Care (Nationalsozialistische Kriegsopferversorgung or NSKOV) was a social welfare organization for seriously wounded veterans as well as frontline fighters of World War I. The NSKOV was established in 1934 and was affiliated to the NSDAP Party. The headquarters of the organization was in Kreuzberg, Berlin (at the time called the SW 68 district) and employed the architect Willy Muehlau to design cheap residential complexes for NSDAP war veterans. These complexes emerged some time between the late 1920s and early 1930s and are protected according to the City of Berlin's Denkmalliste (monument list).
This is a very nice cut off unit insignia from a WWII NSKOV Parade flag. As with the SA and other organizations, they would utilize the political Sturmfahne (Storm Flag) at rallies, which utilized rectangles in the upper left corner to identify the unit. This 7 3/4" x 11 1/2" unit rectangle has a black background with a silver bullion border and white chain-stitched embroidery. The design has the NSKOV emblem in the center, with a canted Swas (hook cross) inside a white circle, which is overlaid on the Iron Cross emblem. This is surrounded by an oval oak leaf wreath, with a sword piercing the entire emblem. Surrounding this is the following text:
N. S.
Kriegsopfer - versorgung
Stützpunkt Sinzig
This roughly translates to "NSKOV - Sinzig Base / Unit". Sinzig is a town in western Germany, currently part of the Rhineland-Palatinate state. We do not know if the unit marking was removed by a USGI, or whether the unit ceased to exist sometime during the war, and was removed when the flag was repurposed.
A very interesting piece of third reich memorabilia, ready to research and display!
