Item Description
Original Item: One-Of-A-Kind. This is an absolutely incredible uniform set attributed to a Major General who served in the Artillery before and during WWII. The uniform set includes a lovely tunic, trousers and wool greatcoat.
The Tunic: A privately purchased Wehrmacht Heer Generalmajor Dienstbluse. It is constructed from a fine quality field-gray wool woven exterior, with a silk-rayon blended interior lining. The collar is constructed of dark forest green wool that is lined in red piping. The collar is adorned by a set of Generalmajor collar tabs, constructed of gold aluminum bullion wire embroidery in a “scrambled egg” shape.
Each shoulder is decorated with the sew-on style Generalmajor rank shoulder boards. They are both constructed out of a row of interwoven silver and gold bullion strands in the typical Russian braid style in an interlocking weave pattern ending at a pebbled gilt metal (magnetic) buttons.
On the right breast is a fine quality gold bullion eagle, constructed of rolled, twisted, and flat hand embroidered gilt stitching, placed onto a dark green wool backing.
The front of the tunic bears four stylized scalloped pockets, two per breast, each closed by a pebbled gilt metal button. Above the top left pocket are three stitched loops to accommodate a medal bar which is also present, with four stitches on the left pocket to accommodate decorations with a horizontal pinback. The breasts of the jacket are closed by seven gilt pebbled metal buttons. The French style cuffs are held securely in place by stitching.
The interior features a silky smooth texture by the rayon-blended material, is met at the arms by a white and dark blue and purple pinstripes liner constructed of identical material. There is minor mothing present as well as red run off staining from the red piping on the uniform.
Awards Present (Left to Right): War Merit Cross W/ Swords, “Hindenburg Cross”, Wehrmacht Long Service Award, Anschluss Commemorative Medal and Sudetenland Medal W/ Prague Castle Bar.
Vaulted Iron Cross 1st Class by Gebrüder Godet & Co.: This an excellent condition example of a WWII Iron Cross First Class 1939, with a Magnetic core, rare "vaulted" design, and straight pin attachment. It is maker marked with rare LDO number L/50 on the back under the pin catch, which represents Gebrüder Godet & Co. of Berlin. The The LDO, (Leistungs Gemeinschaft der Deutscher Ordenshersteller - Administration of German orders Manufacturers), was a self-governing organization formed in 1941 which regulated the manufacturing of all German awards. The firm Gebrüder Godet & Co. was partially licensed in the organization, entry number 50.
The Iron Cross is in very good condition, with the silver plate retained quite well, now oxidized to a lovely dark patina on the front, with a bit less oxidation on the back. The black paint on the cross is good, with just a bit of crazing in areas, and a few spots of flaking on the arms of the cross. Just a great example in the highly desirable "vaulted" shape!
The Trousers: WWII German Army Generals trousers. These are in great worn condition. They are produced in field gray ribbed wool. The twin red stripes down each leg are badge cloth. There are slash type hip pockets with a watch pocket and a single rear pocket that has a scalloped, button flap. There is a 4 button fly with a metal hook and loop closure with top button. There are cinch straps at the hips. The name of the General is written on the inside tailor tag but unfortunately we cannot make out the whole name. We have searched and read through every list of German Generals we could find, but without knowing the majority of the name it is difficult. We are able to make out the year in which he wrote on the tag and it is 1937, putting him literally in these breeches just before WW2. We are able to make out what we believe to be Hauerkauz, but unfortunately it is incorrect. Someone with better eyes than eyes and resources would definitely be able to fully ID him.
Wool Overcoat: The overcoat is in similar field worn condition as the rest of the uniform. There are minor moth nips to the collar and isolated spots throughout the coat. There are no name markings that we can find. The overall condition of the coat is excellent but it does have the same red staining from the wear and rubbing of the red, all consistent with the other uniform articles. All buttons are present and retain much of the original gold finish.
This was a uniform that was definitely worn in the field by a General who wasn’t afraid to step foot out of the staff car and be with his men. This was definitely field and service worn and then stored for many years after the war.
Comes more than ready for further research and display!
