Original Item: One-of-a-kind. A wonderful personal photo album, marked on the front with the Wehrmachtadler Eagle, over regimental designation Inf. Rgt. 59 Hildesheim 3. Komp., or 3rd Company 59th Infantry Regiment, stationed in Hildesheim. It does not appear to be named that we can find. The album overall measures approximately 11" x 7¾".
There are no title pages and the first page has a photograph of what appear to be the regimental “colors” of the 59th Infantry Regiment, a flag surrounded by flowers. There are 23 pages total, each separated with spiderweb “onion skin” separators to keep the pages from sticking together.
There are 81 photographs of various sizes, showing all manner of scenes, the majority relating to the training of troops to prepare for war. There are many photos of soldiers in formation, men marching in a variety of weather, training with bombs, a great display with old WWI items and some newer items, many photos of men relaxing together in the forest. There are even several photos of an interwar configured Maxim MG 08/15 with a blank firing attachment on the front, and the bipod mounting point moved to the muzzle end.
One page dates the photos to 1936, which would make sense as many of the men are wearing refurbished M1916 Stahlhelm. The majority of these photos are likely from the pre-WWII era, with some photos of men in convalescent clothing, so these may be from the war. There are very many inscriptions but they are mostly difficult to read and translate.
Overall a really nice hard to find Infantry regiment album from World War Two Germany. Some really fantastic research potential!

The order in which an album was put together meant something to the creator and may give you clues about the photographs if they’re not identified. If at all possible, keep old albums in their original order. It’s okay to remove loose photos, but make a note of where they came from.
