Item Description
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous piece of German aviation history. Measuring 5¼ x 4¾”, this is the inspection cover off of a Messerschmitt BF-109, a fighter aircraft considered to have been the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. It was one of the most advanced fighters when it first appeared, with an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. A liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine powered it. It was called the Me 109 by Allied aircrew and some German aces, even though this was not the official German designation. We have looked at several period photographs of this piece on a BF-109, and we are entirely confident in its identification.
The cover retains all of its original paint, with a warning painted in red on the back:
Bei Füllung
Peilstab beachten!
Pay Attention to
the dipstick when filling!
The cover retains its original button/latch, which no longer functions due to oxidation to one of the fittings, a small steel buckle. There are also some very small stamps on the reverse of the latch, which are obfuscated by the paint.
This is a phenomenal piece that we are certain came off of a Messerschmidt BF109, recovered in Ukraine. Comes ready for further research and display.
