Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting recovered aluminum fragment purportedly taken from a Messerschmitt Bf 109 that was at the Altenburg Airbase in Germany. The piece was likely cut from one of the aircraft stationed at the airbase when it was served as a military airfield and training/operational site through the final months of World War II before being captured in April 1945 by the 6th U.S. Armored Division and later handed over to the Soviet Red Army in July 1945.
The fragment itsef has curvature and may have been taken from a wind. It measures 2 ⅜ x 1 x 2 ⅝” without the wooden base. With the base it measures 3 ¼” tall, the base itself measuring 4 ⅜ x 6”. The piece itself is stamped on the curved side:
ME-109 G-14
ALTENBURG AIRBASE
GERMANY 1945
As shown there is still some of the original paint near the curved point, with some holes from a saw visible. The back retains nearly all of the paint save for a few scratches and the initials M.M., likely the soldier who took this as a souvenir.
An interesting fragment of an ME-109, ready for display.
