Original Items: Only One Pair Available. This is a very nice original matched pair of German WWII Luftwaffe leather flying mittens showing honest wartime use. The gloves are constructed from white-painted leather with warm fur-lined interiors and long gauntlet-style cuffs intended to provide protection in the cold conditions encountered by Luftwaffe aircrew.

The most interesting feature is the modification to the right mitten. A separate wool finger sleeve has been added to create an individual trigger finger, allowing the wearer greater dexterity while operating a weapon without removing the mitten. This strongly suggests use by an aircrew member who needed to handle a firearm or aircraft-mounted weapon, possibly a gunner, although the original wearer and exact duty cannot be confirmed.

Both gloves show substantial service wear. The white-painted leather surfaces are heavily worn, scuffed, and discolored from age and use. We have not located any visible manufacturer, size, or issue markings.

The left mitten has a large section of leather that appears to have been added as a repair. The repair is clearly visible and contributes to the heavily used appearance of the pair.

The original reason for the white-painted exterior is uncertain, and we cannot determine when the paint was applied. It may have been intended for winter or snow conditions, but without markings or provenance that interpretation should remain tentative.

The mittens are still joined together by their original tie strings, which remain tied to one another.

Luftwaffe aircrew operating at altitude faced extremely low temperatures, particularly in unpressurized aircraft, and insulated gloves were an essential part of cold-weather flight equipment. Heavy mittens offered excellent warmth, but they greatly reduced hand dexterity. Period field modifications such as an added trigger finger could make them more practical for crewmen who needed to operate weapons, controls, or other equipment while remaining protected from the cold.

Overall, this is an appealing and heavily service-used pair of Luftwaffe flying mittens with a particularly interesting period modification. The combination of white-painted leather, fur lining, tied retaining strings, visible repair, and added trigger finger gives the set excellent character and makes it a strong example of personalized wartime aircrew equipment.
