This is a very nice German WWII Luftwaffe tropical breast eagle, or Brustadler, of the pattern intended for wear on the tan tropical uniforms used by Luftwaffe personnel in North Africa and throughout the Mediterranean theater, measuring 9 ½ cm across (3 ¾”). The insignia is machine embroidered in light silver-gray to off-white thread on a tan cotton backing, displaying the characteristic Luftwaffe eagle in flight clutching a canted swas.

The eagle has been closely trimmed around its outline, leaving the original tan backing visible around the embroidered design. The reverse provides an excellent look at the construction, with the tan cloth backing and reverse embroidery readily visible. The close trimming, edge wear, and overall appearance are consistent with a uniform-removed example rather than an untouched piece of unissued insignia.

Good service-used condition. The embroidered eagle remains complete and well defined, with minor discoloration to both the light-colored thread and tan backing. There is scattered fraying and wear around the perimeter, particularly toward the wing tips, together with minor loose fibers from removal and handling. The reverse shows corresponding age and wear but remains substantially intact. No manufacturer or other identifying markings are visible.

The Luftwaffe developed its own tropical clothing and insignia for personnel operating in hot climates. The tropical breast eagle followed the same basic principle. Rather than the blue-gray backing associated with standard continental Luftwaffe uniforms, the national emblem was worked in subdued pale thread on tan cloth so that it matched the tropical uniform.

The Luftwaffe maintained a substantial presence in the North African campaign. Bundesarchiv holdings document organizations including Fliegerführer Afrika, Luftflotte 2, II. Fliegerkorps, X. Fliegerkorps, and numerous airfield commands operating in the theater. Luftwaffe forces provided direct combat support, reconnaissance, airfield operations, and supply assistance to German and Italian ground forces. Tropical Luftwaffe clothing was not exclusive to North Africa, however. Similar uniforms and insignia continued to be encountered throughout the Mediterranean theater, including Sicily, Italy, Greece, and other warm-weather areas.

Its closely trimmed, uniform-removed appearance gives this example considerably more character than an untouched depot example and makes it an appealing representation of the specialized Luftwaffe uniforms developed for operations in southern climates.
