This is a heavily service-worn German WWII Luftwaffe flying ensemble consisting of a privately purchased brown leather shearling flight jacket, a modified pair of fur-lined winter flying trousers commonly known as “Channel Pants,” and a sheepskin-lined leather winter flying helmet. All three pieces show period use, with the jacket and trousers displaying substantial wear and alteration while the helmet remains in notably better condition.
This is a heavily worn Luftwaffe flight jacket set consisting of a heavily worn Luftwaffe Pilot's Brown Leather Shearling Flight Jacket, a modified set of Fur-lined Winter Flying "Channel Pants" Trousers, and a Sheepskin Lined Leather Winter Flying Helmet.
German aircrew clothing evolved considerably from WWI through the Weimar and WWII periods. In addition to regulation flight clothing, Luftwaffe personnel also made extensive use of privately purchased leather jackets and other commercially tailored garments, particularly where additional warmth and protection were desired.
The leather pilot's shearling flight jacket is in fair, heavily worn condition, showing signs of moderate use during the war, with some damage. The jacket is a high quality, German made private purchase, non-regulation, multi-panel dark blue leather construction flight jacket, with a lovely shearling lay down collar that now has some heavy loss of the fur as shown. There is a Luftwaffe breast eagle stitched to the right breast but the stitching looks post-war. It is the standard waist length, and the leather is in fair condition with heavy tearing at the shoulders through to the interior, likely from being on a hanger. There is a tag along the waist, now heavily faded, reading:

We could not pull any maker date or information from this tag. The jacket’s interior shows that the lining was made from several different types of fur, possibly put together from available scraps at a depot. The front RAPID zipper works fine, and all of the PRYM marked snaps are in good shape though there is some oxidation. As mentioned there is loss to the fur on the collar. There is some heavy discoloration of the leather from use.
The fur-lined Winter Flying "Channel Pants" trousers are in rough overall condition, with both leg pockets having been entirely removed. These are of the heavy winter flying type commonly referred to by collectors as “Channel Pants.” The trousers were originally dark blue, but from very heavy period use they have faded to a gray. There is heavy oxidation staining to the exterior of the trousers. The interior fur is mostly retained with some areas of loss, and a small piece fell off that is now in the pocket. The two straps are clips for suspenders are intact but there is some minor tearing. All zippers appear to work fine, with some marked RAPID, Elite, and ZIPP. The PRYM-marked snaps are all in good shape with some oxidation. There is a faded tag inside with a retained name, "Sgt. Hermann Neumann / 10PzSG1", a good research opportunity.
The Luftwaffe Sheepskin Lined Leather Winter Flying Helmet is in great shape with a stamp on one of the straps reading L.B.A. (S) 43, denoting inspection at the Luftwaffebekleidungsamt (Air Force Clothing Office) in Sonneberg, Germany in 1943. The interior fur is in great shape, and an RBNr label is retained:

The combination of the privately purchased shearling flight jacket, heavily modified winter trousers, and 1943-accepted sheepskin-lined helmet presents a strong representative grouping of cold-weather Luftwaffe flying clothing. The shoulder tears, fur loss, exterior discoloration, removed trouser pockets, oxidation staining, loose lining, and other repairs all show substantial wear, while the well-preserved helmet provides an especially complete surviving component of the ensemble.
