This is an original German WWII Luftwaffe M43 Einheitsmütze field cap in measured size 54, constructed from lightweight Luftwaffe blue Fliegerblau wool with a distinctive whipcord style weave rather than the heavier, fuzzy nap more commonly encountered. It retains its fold down cold weather skirt, two blue gray painted pebbled magnetic front buttons, rayon retaining loops, machine embroidered Luftwaffe eagle and national cockade trapezoid, gray rayon lining, and a very convincing service used appearance throughout.

The M43 style Einheitsmütze was a practical field cap intended for everyday wear, with fold down side and rear panels that could provide additional protection in colder weather. Luftwaffe examples were generally produced in blue-gray wool and fitted with branch appropriate insignia at the front. This cap is especially interesting because the body cloth is considerably lighter and more tightly woven than many examples, showing a pronounced whipcord type texture rather than the more familiar napped wool finish.

The exterior shell is made from Luftwaffe blue Fliegerblau wool twill. The fold down skirt is secured at the front by two blue gray painted pebbled magnetic buttons, both still present, and the underside retains the correct rayon loops. The protected fabric beneath the side flaps preserves a stronger original color and texture, providing a useful contrast with the fading and wear visible on the exposed surfaces.

The front peak carries a well preserved insignia trapezoid with a machine embroidered Luftwaffe eagle above the national tricolor cockade. The insignia backing is made from wool of a somewhat different weave and shade than the cap body, closer to the more traditional Luftwaffe cloth commonly encountered on period headgear. The trapezoid is correctly attached only through the outer shell rather than stitched through the lining.

The interior is lined in gray rayon, a typical material for this type of field cap. The lining shows clear evidence of service wear, including sweat staining around the lower edge, heavier soiling across the forehead area, and additional scattered staining throughout. No original size marking was observed inside the cap. Measurement with a hat sizer indicates an approximate size 54.

The visor remains generally intact with no major fabric loss, but the internal cardboard stiffener is cracked through near the center. The two broken sections can be felt moving against one another when handled. There is also additional localized ripping and wear to the visor, so care should be taken when manipulating it.

The exterior remains in very good service used condition overall, with generalized light staining, fading, and handling wear. The protected areas beneath the fold down panels retain noticeably stronger original color and surface texture. Several small tears and holes are present on the right side. Their appearance is more consistent with mechanical service wear than with moth activity.

With its lightweight whipcord style Fliegerblau construction, complete fold down skirt, original front buttons and rayon loops, correctly applied insignia trapezoid, gray rayon lining, and convincing service wear, this is an appealing example of a Luftwaffe M43 Einheitsmütze. The measured rather than stamped size 54, sweat staining, interior soiling, cracked visor stiffener, visor ripping, exterior fading, and small right-side service tears are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well in a Luftwaffe field uniform, M43 headgear, enlisted flight or ground personnel, or advanced German WWII headgear collection.

The M43 Einheitsmütze (Unit Cap) is a variety of "Ski Cap" and was based on the Bergmütze (Mountain Hat) used by Austrian and German Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Troops) during WWI. Germany had adopted it in 1915, and after the war it spread throughout the military.

The skirt that surrounds the cap is made in the same wool as the cap, and can be folded down over the ears, though this was rarely done outside of the Mountain troops, which had a double-thickness skirt. The skirt has a small dip in the front quarter with a divide secured by one aluminum button which is covered by an embroidered cockade. The small section in the front quarter was built shorter to show the insignia, and cover the wearer's chin or mouth, without disturbing breathing by covering the nose. There were also later M43 caps, such as those used by the DAK, that omitted the skirt entirely, as it had little use in the desert heat.
