  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original German WWII Luftwaffe LKp W101 winter flying helmet, manufactured by Siemens-Apparate und Maschinen G.m.b.H. and complete with its installed communications equipment and a set of period flight goggles. The W designation identifies the winter pattern, and this example retains the dark leather exterior, warm shearling lining, throat microphones, headphones, communication cord, rear connector, and oxygen-mask attachment hardware.

The helmet is in excellent condition. It still has the original manufacturers tag on the interior rear:

    FL. Kopfhaube Gr. 59
    Baumuster LKp W101
    Gerät - Nr 124-436 A
    Werk - Nr -/Striwa
    Anf. Z Ln26618
    Hersteller
    Siemens-Apparate u.
    Maschinen G.m.b.H.

Overall condition is very good to excellent. It features the studs and hooks for a 4 point oxygen mask attachment. The throat microphones are marked Mi4b and Ln 26779-2 meaning the avionics are composed of round Mi4b magnetic type throat microphones with four-pole break coupling/plug. It carries the short communication cord favored by fighter pilots and is fitted with a plug that is nicely marked BLK v Fl 27560. This really is a fantastic example of a German WWII Flying helmet.

Also included are a wonder set of Luftwaffe flying goggles in the standard teardrop shape with a divider in the center marked M.W. 42. Unfortunately there is a crack in one of the lenses as shown, but it is minor.

The LKp W101 represented a refinement of the earlier LKp W100 winter flying helmet, incorporating improved Siemens communications equipment and revised earphone and throat-microphone housings. The earphones were contained within streamlined hard-rubber cups covered in leather, while the exterior shape incorporated recesses that helped keep goggle straps in position.

The insulated interior also incorporated additional material around the earphones to improve comfort and sound transmission while helping protect the sensitive communications components from dust and external noise. The throat-microphone straps were adjustable and connected through the rear leather housing, which also served as the junction point for the helmet wiring and external communication lead.

The combination of the Siemens manufacturer label, size 59 designation, complete earphones and Mi4b throat microphones, Ln 26779-2 markings, BLK v Fl 27560 plug, oxygen-mask attachment hardware, winter shearling lining, and included M.W. 42 flying goggles makes this a particularly complete and desirable Luftwaffe flying-helmet set. The minor crack in one goggle lens is the principal condition issue, while the helmet itself remains an excellent example of German WWII aviation equipment.
