Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice original German WWII Luftwaffe LKp N 101 Netzkopfhaube, or mesh summer flying helmet, complete with its original communications equipment and a set of period flight goggles. The lightweight open-net construction made this pattern especially suitable for warm-weather and high-temperature cockpit use, and the design became closely associated with Luftwaffe aircrew during WWII.

This example is a desirable size 57cm and retains its original internal manufacturer label, identifying both the helmet model and maker.

The interior tag, though somewhat faint, reads:

The helmet remains in very good overall condition. The mesh crown is still largely intact and retains good form, although there are several small holes and areas of tearing in the netting, as shown. These are the principal condition issues and are consistent with age and service use.

The helmet retains its original communications equipment, including the characteristic throat microphones. These are marked:

The avionics setup uses oval Mi4b magnetic throat microphones with the correct four-pole break coupling arrangement.

The short communication cord remains present, a configuration commonly associated with aircrew use where excess cable length inside the cockpit was undesirable. The plug is clearly marked:

The set also includes a pair of period Luftwaffe flight goggles. These remain largely complete and display well, although the rubber shows extensive age cracking and deterioration. There is also wear and warping around the eyepieces, and one lens is now loose and should be handled carefully.

The LKp N 101 was part of the Luftwaffe’s family of specialized flying helmets designed to combine communications equipment with as little bulk as possible. Unlike heavier leather flying helmets, the Netzkopfhaube used an open mesh crown to improve ventilation while retaining the earphones, throat microphones, and required wiring.

This design was especially practical for fighter and other combat aircrew operating in enclosed cockpits, where heat and restricted movement could become significant problems. The lack of a conventional chinstrap also helped reduce bulk around the face and neck when used together with oxygen masks and goggles.

Overall, this is a very appealing and honest Luftwaffe aircrew helmet set, retaining its original maker label, size marking, avionics, and goggles. The minor mesh damage and aged goggle rubber reflect genuine use and long storage rather than restoration, giving the set excellent period character.

Editorial Note: I would avoid stating that this pattern was used specifically by fighter pilots unless there is provenance tying this helmet to a fighter unit. The short communication cord and overall configuration are certainly consistent with fighter use, but the LKp N 101 was a Luftwaffe aircrew helmet more broadly.
