Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good condition wartime production German WWII Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge, or Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe, manufactured in zinc with the entire badge cast as a single solid piece. The one-piece construction, integral hinge and catch, and overall die characteristics are consistent with examples attributed by collectors to Arno Wallpach of Stuttgart.

The obverse features an oak leaf wreath surmounted by a Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika. At the center is a storm cloud with a lightning bolt striking the ground below, representing Luftwaffe personnel engaged in ground combat.

This example appears to have originally had a silver wash applied to the wreath and eagle, with a darker painted finish on the cloud and lightning bolt. Much of the silvered finish has worn away over time, leaving only small traces in protected areas and an attractive oxidized zinc patina across the remainder of the badge.

The darker finish on the central cloud shows chipping and flaking, particularly around the point where the lightning bolt strikes the wreath. The lightning bolt itself retains considerably more of its original dark finish. Despite the loss of surface finish, the molded details remain strong and well defined.

The reverse is fitted with a functional round wire plated steel pin. The hinge and catch are formed as part of the original one-piece casting rather than being separately applied fittings. The pin remains fully functional and engages the catch correctly.

The badge is unmarked, but its solid cast zinc construction, integral hinge and catch arrangement, and overall design characteristics closely match known examples attributed to Arno Wallpach of Stuttgart. We have compared this example to other attributed badges and believe the construction is consistent with that manufacturer, although without a maker mark the attribution should remain qualified.

The Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge was instituted on March 31, 1942, by Hermann Göring in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the Luftwaffe. It was intended to recognize Luftwaffe personnel who distinguished themselves in ground combat.

The badge was designed by graphic and textile artist Sigmund von Weech. Its design incorporates the Luftwaffe eagle above a storm cloud and lightning bolt surrounded by an oak leaf wreath.

The basic award was generally earned through participation in three separate ground combat actions on separate days. Luftwaffe personnel who had previously received comparable Heer ground combat awards could be required to exchange them for the Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge.

As the war progressed, additional numbered grades were introduced to recognize personnel who had participated in a much greater number of eligible combat actions. On November 10, 1944, higher grades were authorized based on accumulated combat operations:

1st Grade: 3 to 24 eligible operations
2nd Grade: 25 eligible operations
3rd Grade: 50 eligible operations
4th Grade: 75 eligible operations
5th Grade: 100 eligible operations

With its textbook one-piece zinc construction, integral hardware, strong remaining detail, and attractive aged patina, this is a particularly appealing example of a Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge attributed to Arno Wallpach of Stuttgart.
