Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII Type I Luftwaffe gravity knife, or Fallschirmjäger-Messer, manufactured by Solinger Metallwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co., commonly abbreviated SMF. It retains its full length 4" stainless steel blade, walnut grip scales, folding marlinspike, and functioning gravity operated blade mechanism. The internal spring assembly was repaired or replaced at an unknown time.

The knife was developed as a utility and emergency tool for Luftwaffe airborne personnel. Its sliding blade could be opened one handed by raising the release lever and pointing the knife downward, allowing gravity to extend the blade. Releasing the lever locks the blade in place. The knife could also be opened by operating the release while using a controlled wrist motion.

A folding marlinspike is fitted at the opposite end of the frame. It was intended primarily for loosening knots, working with parachute lines, and other rigging related tasks. The marlinspike does not have a true locking mechanism. When fully extended, it engages a distinct detent that holds it in position with relatively strong resistance.

This is the early Type I configuration, constructed with fixed walnut grip scales and without the later takedown feature. Type I knives were produced before the introduction of the more easily disassembled Type II pattern during the war.

The stainless steel blade measures a full 4" in length and has a relatively blunt spear point profile with a flat ground utility edge. One side bears the SMF seated king trademark above:

Rostfrei indicates stainless or rust resistant steel construction.

The blade remains in very good overall condition, and portions of the original factory crossgrain are still visible on both sides. This fine transverse finishing pattern is important to advanced collectors because it helps demonstrate that the blade retains at least part of its original factory surface. The crossgrain is worn and reduced from past cleaning.

The cutting edge shows evidence of sharpening, together with several small dents. The blade surfaces also display extensive cleaning marks, but the maker trademark remains clear and the blade retains its full original length.

The metal frame and other principal components are stainless steel. The base of the marlinspike bears a Luftwaffe inspection marking consisting of the number 5 within an eagle device.

The blade mechanism remains functional. Raising and operating the release allows the blade to extend, and it locks into position correctly. This description records the knife’s current mechanical operation but should not be interpreted as a guarantee against future failure of the aged or repaired components.

The spring assembly shows evidence of repair or replacement. There are no assembly numbers on the release lever or spring base, and no rivets are present on the reverse to secure a separate spring component. The installed spring appears to be formed from a single piece of metal, while original assemblies of this pattern normally used separate components joined by rivets. We were unable to determine when the repair was performed.

Spring cracking and failure are commonly encountered on surviving gravity knives due to the design, age, and repeated stress placed on the mechanism. The repaired spring is therefore an important condition and originality consideration and has been fully disclosed.

The walnut grip scales are secured by the standard four retaining rivets. Both remain in very good condition, with no major cracks or chips. They show several light dents, stains, and areas of handling wear. The right grip displays particularly attractive flame figuring in the wood grain.

The rear loop is intact, moving easily, and there is an attached brass chain of unknown origon.

With its early fixed scale Type I construction, full length SMF marked stainless blade, surviving factory crossgrain, Luftwaffe inspection marking, functional gravity operated blade, detent retained marlinspike, and attractive walnut grips, this is a strong representative example of specialized German airborne equipment. The repaired spring, past blade cleaning, sharpening, edge dents, and minor grip wear are fully disclosed, while the knife retains excellent display appeal for a Luftwaffe, Fallschirmjäger, German WWII edged weapon, or military survival equipment collection.
