  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original German WWII Luftwaffe enlisted man/NCO breast eagle retained on a cut section of blue-gray Luftwaffe uniform wool. The insignia measures approximately 10.2 cm (4 in) wide and depicts the characteristic Luftwaffe eagle in flight clutching a canted swas., embroidered in subdued gray-tan thread on a dark blue-gray cloth backing. Rather than having been removed as a loose badge, the eagle remains attached to a portion of the garment on which it was worn, preserving the surrounding wool and original application stitching.

The insignia has been machine sewn to the uniform cloth, with the line of attachment stitching still present around the eagle. The remaining section of wool has an irregular cut outline, clearly reflecting its removal from a larger garment. A folded portion of the underlying cloth remains at one end, retaining additional evidence of the original uniform construction.

Condition is good overall, with age and service wear appropriate to a uniform cut-off. The blue-gray wool shows surface wear, scattered soiling, and minor moth damage, while the perimeter is unfinished from removal and exhibits localized fraying. The embroidered eagle remains substantially complete and clearly defined, with mellowing and discoloration to the originally lighter embroidery.

    Historical Context
The Luftwaffe adopted a distinctive system of uniforms and insignia following its public establishment as an independent branch of the German armed forces in 1935. One of its principal identifying devices was the flying eagle clutching a swas., an emblem worn prominently on Luftwaffe uniforms throughout the Second World War. For enlisted personnel and NCOs, the breast eagle was generally executed as embroidered cloth insignia rather than the metallic forms used for certain other applications.

The breast eagle served as a branch-specific national emblem and was normally positioned on the right breast of the uniform. Its broad horizontal form made it one of the most immediately recognizable elements of Luftwaffe dress. The embroidered design incorporated a stylized eagle with extended wings, its body angled forward and its talons surrounding the swas. below.

Luftwaffe uniforms were principally produced in shades of blue-gray wool, a color scheme that visually distinguished the air service from the field-gray uniforms of the Heer. The standard service and field wardrobe evolved considerably between the mid-1930s and the end of the war, but the national breast eagle remained a persistent feature on tunics and field garments worn by ordinary Luftwaffe personnel.

Among the best-known wartime garments was the Fliegerbluse, a short blue-gray wool field blouse that became closely associated with Luftwaffe enlisted personnel and NCOs. Originally developed as a practical working and flying garment, it became widely used as general service dress. Other Luftwaffe tunic patterns likewise carried the breast eagle, making the insignia applicable across a broad range of air-service occupations rather than identifying a particular flying qualification or technical specialty.

This distinction is important when interpreting the emblem. The Luftwaffe breast eagle identified the wearer's service affiliation, while rank was conveyed principally through shoulder straps and collar insignia. Specialized duties could be indicated by separate qualification badges, trade insignia, flying badges, or other devices. The eagle alone therefore does not establish a particular rank, unit, aircrew qualification, or occupation beyond its association with the Luftwaffe enlisted/NCO uniform system.
