Original Item: Only One Available.This is an original German WWII Latvian national sleeve shield, machine embroidered on black wool and featuring a red national shield crossed diagonally by an off-white stripe. Above the stripe is the clearly embroidered inscription: LATVIJA (Latvia).

This form is commonly described in collector references as a later or final German-manufactured pattern of Latvian volunteer sleeve shield. It was intended for Latvian personnel serving in the Latvian Legion and its two principal Waffen-SS divisions, the 15th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Latvian) and 19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Latvian).

The shield is in good to very good original condition. The red field remains particularly strong, while the formerly white embroidery has mellowed to an attractive off-white tone. The word LATVIJA remains completely legible and the diagonal band is well defined.

The black wool backing shows expected age and storage wear, including fraying and loose fibers around the cut perimeter, with possible minor mothing. There are scattered loose threads across the face, minor surface soiling and age discoloration to the lighter embroidery, and a small disturbed area near the upper corner. The reverse retains extensive original off-white bobbin stitching with the red base threads visible beneath. No clear continuous line of uniform attachment stitching is apparent.

The Latvian Legion, officially the Lettische Legion der Waffen-SS, was ordered into formation under German authority in February 1943. It developed into two major Latvian Waffen-SS formations, the 15. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr. 1) and the 19. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr. 2). Earlier wartime designations used the term Freiwilligen, or volunteer, although the composition of the Latvian formations was mixed. Alongside genuine volunteers were large numbers of men brought into service through German-directed mobilization and conscription.

The 15. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr. 1) was committed on the Eastern Front and suffered heavy losses during the German withdrawal from the Baltic region. After severe fighting in 1944, much of the division was transferred to Germany for rebuilding and reorganization. It subsequently returned to combat during the final months of the war, including operations in Pomerania and fighting within Germany during 1945.

The 19. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr. 2) remained in Latvia after the Soviet advance cut off German forces in Courland. It became part of the forces assigned to Heeresgruppe Kurland and fought through the series of Courland battles from late 1944 until the capitulation of German forces there in May 1945.

Latvian personnel wore a number of national distinctions in addition to standard Waffen-SS uniform insignia. Among the most recognizable was the Latvian Nationalitätsabzeichen, or national sleeve shield. These shields appeared in several forms, including locally produced and German-manufactured examples. The insignia was initially prescribed for the upper right sleeve, but regulations issued in April 1944 transferred it to the upper left sleeve below the sleeve eagle. Period photographs nevertheless demonstrate some variation in actual wear.
