  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original German WWII Kriegsmarine motor vehicle service pennant, officially known as the Dienstwimpel am Kraftwagen für die übrigen Angehörigen der Kriegsmarine. Introduced in 1940, this distinctive triangular pennant was used on Kriegsmarine motor vehicles as a service identification device for naval personnel outside the admiral-specific vehicle pennant system. The pennant measures approximately 19 cm [7 1/2 in] high by 28.5 cm [11 1/4 in] long.

It is constructed from dark navy-blue cloth with a large machine-embroidered yellow-gold national eagle and wreath enclosing a canted swas. on each side. The perimeter is finished with narrow gold-colored cord edging, while the vertical hoist is reinforced with dark woven material. White suspension cords remain attached at the upper and lower corners for securing the pennant to its vehicle staff or fitting.

Condition is good overall, with expected age, handling, and service wear. The dark cloth shows scattered soiling and minor surface wear, while the embroidered eagles remain well defined and retain strong color. The gold-colored edge cord is largely intact, with wear and discoloration from age. The hoist reinforcement shows fraying and wear, particularly toward the ends. One side also has several small areas of hardened reddish-pink material applied at isolated points around the field and edges. The material may be old wax or adhesive, possibly associated with small repairs or stabilization, but its exact composition and purpose cannot be established.

    Historical Context

The German Kriegsmarine used a regulated system of flags and pennants on official motor vehicles to indicate naval service affiliation and the status of personnel being transported. These compact vehicle-mounted insignia formed part of a broader hierarchy of naval command and identification flags used ashore.

This particular type belonged to the general Kriegsmarine vehicle pennant system and was intended for naval personnel outside the separate admiral-specific vehicle flag categories. Admiral ranks and certain senior command appointments were represented by distinct standards and pennants, allowing rank and command status to be recognized quickly when traveling by automobile.

Vehicle flags were mounted on short staffs fitted to official cars, most commonly near the front of the vehicle. Their small size and simple, high-contrast designs made them easily recognizable while keeping them practical for use on moving vehicles. The reinforced hoist and surviving attachment cords on this example reflect that functional purpose.

Such pennants would have been encountered wherever Kriegsmarine personnel operated ashore, including naval bases, ports, coastal-defense installations, headquarters, administrative centers, training establishments, and other shore commands. They formed part of the everyday visual language of the service, identifying official naval transport within the much larger military transportation system of wartime Germany.

The dark blue field and gold-colored national emblem follow the traditional colors closely associated with German naval uniforms and insignia. In this form, the pennant is a compact but distinctive piece of Kriegsmarine vehicle equipment, representing the administrative and ceremonial side of naval service away from ships and submarines.
