Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very scarce German WWII Kriegsmarine Hand Held Anemometer, or Wind Speed Gauge. It utilizes the force of the wind on the spinning cups on the top to move the indicator on the side, indicating the wind speed, which we assume is in km/h. It is marked with the Kriegsmarine Eagle / M marking in the middle of the gauge face, and has serial number 224113 on the left hand side. The bakelite handle can be removed, and it measures about 8 inches in length, with the case measuring 9 3/4" x 4 3/4" x 4 1/2".
On surface ships large anemometers were permanently mounted on the exterior of the ship, however for U-boats this was simply not an option, as they would be destroyed when submerged. For this reason they had to use these small handheld versions when surfaced, which were easily stowed away when not needed.
This example is in very good shape, though the numbers on the dial no longer glow. It still measures wind speed, but we have no idea how accurate it is. It fits relatively well in the case, but it looks like the case may not be correct for it. Ready to research and display!
