Original German WWII Kriegsmarine Large Brass Cigarette Lighter Presented to Captain of U-570 - dated 1941

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. Recently acquired in the United Kingdom, this has a great story behind it. This brass massive cigarette lighter was recovered after the Capture of U-570 on August 27th 1941 by a British Lockheed Hudson Light Bomber Air Craft of Squadron 269, after the vessel was damaged by a depth charge. The U-Boat was on its first patrol, which definitely did not end as planned by the German forces.

The side of the lighter is engraved with an illustration of the U-570 on the side, with boat's name and captain listed underneath:

U 570
KAPITÄNLEUTNANT
HANS JOACHIM RAHMLOW

The rear of the lighter shows an engraved Iron Cross with 1941 in its center. The lighter measures 4" X 3 11/2" X 1" and is clearly a desk top model. Most likely presented to Kapitänleutnant Rahmlow in April of 1941 when the submarine was first launched. These were usually constructed by the workers in the engine room, who needed to be able to fabricate items of this complexity as part of their duty.

U-570 was the only U-Boat to be captured by the Allies and then recommissioned by the Royal Navy as H.M.S. GRAPH and used against her previous masters until she was decommissioned by the British in 1944.

Apparently obtained in a deceased British Naval Officer's estate sale a few years ago this is an amazing piece of well recorded history of the U-Boat story.

Polished, in excellent condition and ready to display!
