This is a German WWII Kriegsmarine Destroyer War Badge (Zerstörer-Kriegsabzeichen), displaying the distinctive destroyer cutting through heavy seas within an oak-leaf wreath, surmounted by the German national eagle and swas. This is a well-used example with considerable finish loss and age-related surface wear. Most importantly for condition, the horizontal attachment pin has been replaced, with evidence of repair and reworking visible on the reverse.

The Destroyer War Badge was instituted on June 4, 1940, by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder in recognition of the German destroyer crews involved in the Norwegian Campaign, particularly the costly fighting around Narvik. The design was created by Berlin artist Paul Casberg. Subsequent regulations broadened eligibility beyond the original Narvik crews, with the badge awarded for such qualifications as participation in multiple engagements or offensive mining operations, repeated operational sorties, wounds sustained in action, survival of a vessel lost through enemy action, or particularly distinguished service.

The classic design consisted of a gold-colored oak-leaf wreath and eagle surrounding a silver-gray destroyer charging through a prominent bow wave. On this example, much of the original contrasting finish has worn away, leaving the badge with an attractive subdued, aged appearance. Traces of warmer coloration remain around portions of the wreath and recessed areas, while the ship, oak leaves, and eagle all remain clearly defined. There is scattered oxidation and general wear throughout.

The reverse shows considerably more evidence of use and repair. The horizontal pin is a replacement and displays a noticeably different surface and finish from the body of the badge. The reverse also exhibits scratches, areas of abrasion, darker discoloration, and visible soldering or disturbance around portions of the attachment hardware. A retaining hook remains behind the upper eagle area. No maker's marking can presently be identified on the reverse, and the extensive surface wear and reworking make a confident manufacturer attribution inadvisable. Despite the replaced pin and substantial finish loss, this remains a very recognizable example of one of the best-known Kriegsmarine combat awards.
