Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII HJ member armband, of the familiar red-and-white pattern worn as part of the organization’s uniform.

The armband is constructed from red woven cloth with a separately applied white horizontal center stripe. Sewn to the front is the characteristic white diamond-shaped insignia bearing a black woven swas. emblem. The diamond is neatly machine applied and retains strong contrast against the red field.

Of particular interest is the reverse construction. The ends have been joined vertically to form the armband for wear, and the interior retains several small snap fasteners that were hand-sewn into place. These were evidently intended to mate with corresponding fasteners on the uniform sleeve, keeping the armband positioned correctly during wear. Period HJ armbands are known with this type of personalized snap arrangement, making this a particularly nice example with clear evidence of actual uniform use.

The armband remains in good, honest worn condition, retaining strong red coloration and a complete, readily recognizable central insignia. The white stripe and diamond show age toning and discoloration, while the red fabric exhibits areas of staining and minor fading from age and use. The rear seam remains intact, and the interior attachment snaps are still present, adding considerable character and providing evidence of how the armband was fitted to the original wearer’s uniform. The black swas. remains well defined with only expected surface wear.

The HJ served as the principal state-controlled youth organization of Third Reich Germany, combining organized sports, outdoor activities, marching, drills, political instruction, and increasingly military-oriented training. During the 1930s the regime progressively eliminated competing youth organizations and brought German youth life under centralized control. A 1936 law greatly expanded the organization’s authority, and a March 1939 decree made membership compulsory for German youth between the ages of 10 and 18 under the regime’s eligibility rules.

Uniforms and insignia were an important part of this system, emphasizing conformity, group identity, and the organization’s regimented character. Surviving wartime HJ uniform jackets in museum collections show this type of red-and-white armband worn prominently on the upper sleeve.
