  • Original Item: Only One Set Available. This is an original matched German WWII Heer officer rank insignia set for a Leutnant serving in the Pioneer or Combat Engineer branch. The set consists of one matched pair of officer collar tabs and one matched pair of button attached junior officer shoulder boards, all incorporating the correct black Waffenfarbe associated with Heer Pioneer and engineer troops.

German Army uniforms used collar and shoulder insignia to identify rank and branch of service. During the 20th century this system became increasingly standardized, with branch colors, or Waffenfarben, used in combination with rank insignia to provide an immediate visual indication of the wearer’s position and service branch.

This is a complete set of German WWII Heer Army Pioneer Combat Engineer Leutnant Officer Uniform rank insignia, which consists of the following:

    - One MATCHED PAIR (left and right) of Heer Army Offiziere Kragenpatten (Officer Shoulder Tabs) for the field and service uniform, made from the standard internal lacquered buckram stiffeners wrapped with a flaschengrün (dark bottle-green) wool backing. These have two parallel hand embroidered Litzenspiegel in silver gray threading on the backing, symbolizing the double braid of the 19th century. Each of these has a Schwarz (Black) Mittelstreifen (median strip), the Corps Color (Waffenfarbe) for the Pioniere (Combat engineers), as well as Assault, Armored, Fortress, and Railway engineers.

    - One MATCHED PAIR of "button-attached" style Heer Army Leutnante Schulterklappen (junior officer shoulder straps), constructed with two rows of fine silver flatware "Russia Braid" double piping around the edge, which form a loop around the buttonhole. There are no rank "pips", indicating the rank of Leutnant, a rank equivalent to a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. They have the correct black wool base material and straps.

Overall condition is very good. The collar tabs show light wear and staining from age and use. The shoulder boards show some wear to the Russia braid. There are also several holes through the shoulder boards where some form of cypher or unit insignia appears to have been mounted previously. The original insignia is no longer present, and its exact identity cannot be determined from the surviving holes alone.

With both matched pairs present, correct black Pioneer Waffenfarbe, hand embroidered officer collar tabs, junior officer Russia braid shoulder boards, and clear Leutnant rank configuration, this is a particularly appealing Heer Combat Engineer officer insignia set. The light staining, braid wear, and former cypher mounting holes are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well with a Pioneer officer tunic, Combat Engineer uniform, junior officer insignia collection, or advanced German WWII Heer display.
