Original Item: Only One Set Available. This is an original German WWII Heer Panzer officer rank insignia set for the rank of Leutnant, consisting of a matched pair of officer collar tabs and a pair of sew in shoulder boards with rose pink Waffenfarbe. Together, the insignia identify a junior officer serving with the Heer armored branch.
German Army uniforms used collar tabs and shoulder insignia to identify rank, branch of service, and other organizational information. By WWII, the system had developed into a highly standardized combination of insignia styles and branch colors, with the Waffenfarbe providing an immediate visual indication of the wearer’s arm of service.
This is a complete set of German WWII Heer Army Panzer Armored Corps Leutnant Officer Uniform rank insignia, which consists of the following:
- One MATCHED PAIR (left and right) of Heer Army Offiziere Kragenpatten (Officer Collar Tabs) for the field and service uniform, made from the standard internal lacquered buckram stiffeners wrapped with a flaschengrün (dark bottle-green) wool backing. These have two parallel bullion hand embroidered Litzenspiegel on the backing, symbolizing the double braid of the 19th century. Each of these has a rosa (rose- pink) Mittelstreifen (median strip), the correct Waffenfarbe (Corps Color) for the Panzertruppen (Armored Forces), as well as Kraftfahrkampftruppe - Kraftfahrtruppen (Motor Vehicle Combat Troops)
- One PAIR of "sew in" style Heer Army Leutnante Schulterklappen (junior officer shoulder straps), constructed with two rows of fine silver flatware "Russia Braid" double piping around the edge, which form a loop around the buttonhole. There are no rank "pips", indicating the rank of Leutnant, a rank equivalent to a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. They have the correct rose pink wool base material for Panzer.
The shoulder boards show more evidence of actual service than the collar tabs. There is wear to the Russia braid and visible stitch marks at the ends, indicating that they were removed from a uniform. The two boards are slightly different in size and construction, so although they form a functional pair for display, they should not be considered a perfectly factory matched pair.
With its matched officer collar tabs, rose pink Panzer Waffenfarbe, bullion embroidery, and sew in Leutnant shoulder boards showing actual uniform attachment, this is an appealing Heer armored branch insignia grouping. The light staining to the collar tab center strips, wear to the Russia braid, stitch evidence, and slight differences between the shoulder boards are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well in a Heer Panzer officer, German WWII uniform insignia, Leutnant rank, or advanced branch insignia collection.
