  • Original Item: One-of-a-kind-set. Here we have a wonderful personal photo album, with what looks to be all photographs they took themselves, or had someone else take of them. It is covered with a lovely textured and embossed blue leatherette cover with gold accent lines on the corners, and there is a silver Heer Army Wehrmachtadler Eagle in the upper right corner. There is no information identifying what unit the owner was from, and the album measures approximately 9 1/4” x 6 3/4”.

A total of 59 photographs fill the pages of this album, making it a treasure-trove of images taken from the viewpoint of a young, patriotic German soldier. These are contained on pages, which are not captioned, and are separated by "spiderweb" pattern "onion skin" separators. All of the photos appear to be attached by corner attachment tabs.

The photos show a wide variety of scenes, and we would guess some were taken in France, as the first photo in the album is of a broken down French Renault FT Tank, followed directly by a picture of German troops in rail cars. There are additional rail car photos, photos of soldiers in the winter, various other locations, and so forth. There are also multiple pictures of what we believe is the album owner in civilian clothes on his personal motorcycle. Definitely a wide variety of different scenes!

Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the Second
World War, now that almost eighty years have passed.

The older albums such as these usually withstand the ravages of time. The leather or fabric covers may wear, but the pages stay well intact. The black paper albums of the early 20th century are more fragile, while the glue from magnetic albums can damage photographs. And, as with all old photographs, keep albums in a safe, climate controlled environment
