  • Original Item: Only One Available. The K-98 dress bayonet was a dress version of the combat style, and was worn by enlisted and NCO personnel for dress and parade occasions. The bayonets were finished with a high-quality nickel plating, with stag or bakelite grip plates and black painted scabbard. The choice of blade length was left to the purchaser, either the nickel-plated short (20cm) or long (25cm) version. There was usually a red or green colored felt insert in the rifle slot and the bayonet was suspended from a black or brown leather frog. Some had a functional bayonet latch, while it was ornamental on some. Often they would also have a sword knot, or troddel, and the color would indicate the branch or rank.

This great Heer (army) example is in excellent condition, and unlike most has a polished carbon steel blade, not one that is nickel plated. It also has been personalized by adding a "Danziger" style panzer armored corps skull to the right grip scale. It comes complete with scabbard, frog, and troddel knot, making this a great WWII bayonet set!

The bayonet has a nice alloy hilt, with most of the Nickel Plating intact, though there is some light wear, as shown. The mortise button and blade release are fully functional, and the green felt insert is fully intact, though a bit discolored from age. The grip plates are both lovely checkered black bakelite, and both are in great condition. They are retained by nickel-plated steel split nuts. The attached skill has a lovely oxidized zinc patina.

The carbon steel blade is in excellent condition, and examination in the light shows that it retains factory final polish grind cross grain present throughout the blade, with some fading from runner wear and cleaning. This texture is iconic, and is the definitive identifying characteristic for a real WWII German Blade. The blade is correctly unsharpened, and really looks fantastic, with the only issue being some bending on the last 1/4" by the tip.

The rear ricasso of the blade is etched with the "Jung Siegfried" trademark logo of Ernst Pack & Söhne, Ritterwerk, which is in excellent condition. The mark shows their trademark "Young Siegfried wielding a hammer" Logo to the left, with with the stylized "Siegfried" at the top and left side over "Waffen", which is over the three line address to the right. The whole trademark reads:

    Siegried
    WAFFEN
    E. PACK
    & SÖHNE
    SOLINGEN

Per J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this firm used this trademark specifically on "walking out" dress bayonets for the police and army. The company mostly made daggers so there is not as much information regarding the bayonets. The company survived the war, until it was sold in the 1960s to another knife company from Solingen, and the maker mark continued to be used into the 1990s.

The scabbard is straight throughout and has black enamel paint. This paint is still in very good condition with just a couple of scratches, and the usual crazing and checking from age. Definitely much better paint than we usually see! Attached to the scabbard is a nice black patent leather frog, which has had the finish crack and check over the years, giving it a great look. Wrapped around this is a very nice WWII type troddel knot, which has a white stem and red slider and top to the end ball, indicating the wearer was a member of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Company of the regiment they were attached to.

A great example of a German Long 98k dress bayonet by a well-known maker, complete with scabbard, frog, and portepee, ready to display!
