Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original laminated lower stock and upper handguard for the German WWII Gewehr 33/40, commonly known as the G33/40 “Mountain Carbine.” The stock retains several important G33/40 fittings, including the distinctive protective steel plate around the butt, nose cap and bayonet fitting, receiver reinforcing crossbolt, and approximately 30mm metal bolt disassembly disc through the buttstock.
Although related to the German Karabiner 98k and based upon the same Mauser operating system, the Gewehr 33/40 was a separate and substantially shorter carbine. Its origins can be traced to the Czech Vz.33, which was developed at Zbrojovka Brno for the Czechoslovak gendarmerie and financial guard. The compact Vz.33 used a 19.4 inch barrel, measured approximately 39.4 inches overall, and weighed just over seven pounds while retaining the full power 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge.
Production of the Vz.33 began in 1934. A total of 25,311 examples were manufactured through 1939, including 20,011 for the Czechoslovak gendarmerie and 5,300 for the financial guard.
Following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia and the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the Brno arms factory was incorporated into the German wartime arms industry. The Vz.33 design was modified for German military service and adopted in 1940 as the Gewehr 33/40. Production continued at Brno through 1942, with approximately 131,503 manufactured for German use.
The short and lightweight G33/40 was particularly well suited to the German Gebirgsjäger, or mountain troops, who required a compact rifle for use in difficult alpine terrain. Among its most recognizable features was the laminated stock with its large steel protective plate on the left side of the butt. This plate helped protect the wood when the carbine was used as a support or climbing aid in mountainous conditions.
This stock retains the nose cap and bayonet fitting, receiver reinforcing crossbolt, bolt disassembly disc, and the distinctive protective steel butt fitting associated with the G33/40. The included laminated upper handguard has the proper cutout for the rear sight and fits well onto the lower stock, making this a particularly useful matched project set.
The wood displays overall scuffing, handling wear, and scattered damage, but nothing that appears overly serious. The end of the stock adjacent to the buttplate is prominently stamped: ABH
We have not been able to determine the meaning or origin of this marking, and further research may reveal additional information.
Original G33/40 stocks and handguards are difficult components to locate, particularly examples retaining this many metal fittings. This would make an excellent foundation for restoring a Gewehr 33/40 Mountain Carbine or for completing a display of this distinctive German WWII Mauser variant.
