Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very attractive original German military bronze relief wall plaque depicting the left facing profile of a soldier wearing a German Stahlhelm steel helmet. Measuring 4 5/8" wide, the plaque has strong sculptural depth and a nicely antiqued surface that emphasizes the contours of the helmet and soldier's profile. A small triangular suspension loop on the reverse allows it to be readily displayed on a wall.
The soldier is shown in a simple profile composition with the Stahlhelm dominating the upper portion of the relief. The helmet appears to have characteristics associated with the WWI style German steel helmet, although the sculptural treatment is not sufficiently precise to identify a specific helmet model with confidence. It may instead have been intended as a more generalized representation of the German soldier.
The bronze surface has been given an attractive antiqued finish, with darker recessed areas contrasting against the raised portions of the relief. This treatment gives the plaque considerably more visual depth and helps bring out the facial profile and helmet details when displayed under normal room lighting.
The reverse is fitted with a small triangular hanging loop for wall mounting. The plaque is otherwise unmarked except for the signature along the lower edge of the profile:
A. KRÜGER
This is presumably the name of the artist, sculptor, or maker responsible for the plaque. We were unable to positively identify the individual represented by the A. KRÜGER signature, so no further artist attribution is being made. Further research may reveal additional information.
Overall this is a very appealing piece of German military decorative art, with a compact 4 5/8" size that makes it particularly easy to display. The strong profile relief, antiqued bronze surface, period military subject matter, and clearly visible A. KRÜGER signature give it considerably more character than an unsigned generic wall plaque.
For the collector of German military art, Stahlhelm related material, bronze plaques, or soldier portraiture, this example has excellent display appeal. Its bold helmeted profile, attractive aged finish, signed lower edge, and original wall mounting loop make it well suited to a German military art display or as a decorative companion piece alongside period helmets and field equipment.
