Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely framed portrait photograph of the legendary German Panzer Armored field commander, Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel. The photograph looks to measure 6 1/4"W x 8 3/4"H, though it has been matted and part of it may be under the matting at the bottom. It is contained in a lovely wooden frame measuring 9 3/4" x 12 3/4", which looks to be decades old. The color of the photograph print looks to be period correct, so we believe it is WWII period.
The portrait photograph shows Rommel in his uniform, and there is a single rank pip on each of his shoulder boards, indicating it was taken when he held the rank of Generalleutnant. He had received this promotion following the fall of France, when he was promoted to the Commander of the Deutsches Afrikakorps in 1941. He is wearing the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, which he was awarded on 20 March 1941 for actions taken when he commander of the 7th Panzer-Division, his previous command. This allows us to date the photograph to 1941, as in January 1942, he would be promoted to General der Panzertruppe and receive the Swords device for his knight's cross.
A great chance to pick up a great period portrait photograph of "The Desert Fox", one of the most legendary field commanders of WWII, who would later be involved with 20 July Plot Unternehmen Walküre (Operation Valkyrie) assassination attempt of der führer. We have had very little Rommel material before, and it is highly sought after!
Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944), known as The Desert Fox (Wüstenfuchs), was a German Generalfeldmarschall (field marshal) during World War II. He served in the Wehrmacht of National Socialist Germany, as well as in the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic, and Imperial German Army of the German Empire. He had acquitted himself very well during the first world war, receiving the Pour le Mérite award, and would become one of the most well-known German field commanders during WWII. His book on Infantry Tactics was highly influential, and he was working on a similar book for Tank Tactics when he was forced to commit suicide following the attempted assassination of Adolf H. He was extremely well regarded by his contemporaries on both sides of the war, and was also very popular with the German people.
