  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting four pocket camouflage smock, made by a unit or depot tailor from pieces of a double sided Army Splinter Pattern (Heeres Splittermuster 31) fabric used to make Zeltbahn Poncho / Tent Quarter. These utilize a water repellent material called Makostoff, so this would have been a great thing to have during warm and wet conditions. We thought at first it just used the same fabric, but close examination shows that it was made from an actual Zeltbahn, and the reinforced border with eyelets was used as the edge trim in many areas.

The front of the tunic features a seven button front closure, and is outfitted with four unpleated pockets with square flaps on top. All of the buttons are the correct pebbled type, and are sewn directly to the fabric, and they were painted black to make them less reflective. We assume this was made using left over buttons from the depot or unit, which is why they do not match. There are not any markings on the tunic, but it definitely shows a relatively high level of manufacture. It has a collar, but also has a hood with a draw string as well. There are not any locations for rank insignia or the like that we can see, which of course would ruin the camouflage profile.

The smock does show staining, tears, fraying, and other signs of use, so it definitely was used for a good amount of time after being constructed from a zeltbahn. A fantastic and possibly unique camouflage smock from WWII. Ready to research and display!
