This is a very nice German WWII or pre-war era Fire Brigade officer’s belt and buckle, featuring a traditional firefighting emblem and the long established German fire service motto. The combination of the black patent leather belt, nickel plated brass buckle, and prominent helmet, ladder, and axe design gives the set a distinctive formal appearance associated with German fire service uniforms of the period.

The belt is fabricated from thick leather with a black patent exterior and a raw leather interior. It retains the standard adjustment tab with two rows of nine holes, allowing the pronged end clasp to alter the length of the belt.

When let out completely, the belt has an overall length of 38½”. The buckle is nickel-plated brass with a plate on the front depicting a fireman helmet with a crossed ladder and axe, over a rope. The buckle reads:

This motto had been associated with German firefighting organizations since the 19th century and expressed the fire service ideals of duty, community protection, and service to others.

The buckle is unmarked on the back. The belt itself has some heavy crazing and cracking as shown, but the end tab is intact. It is a bit stiff from age. 

German firefighting organizations underwent substantial administrative changes during the 1930s. Heinrich Himmler was appointed Chief of the German Police in the Reich Ministry of the Interior on June 17th, 1936, bringing Germany’s police services under increasingly centralized national control. Uniform regulations issued during this period sought to standardize the appearance of the various police and emergency service branches.

The professional municipal fire brigades were formally reorganized as the Feuerschutzpolizei under the November 23rd, 1938 Law on Firefighting. The Fire Protection Police became a technical branch of the Ordnungspolizei under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior. Carmine was used as the identifying branch color associated with the fire service. Earlier dark blue and blue black fire brigade uniforms remained in use during the transitional period and, in some cases, continued to be worn during the war.

The traditional firefighting emblem and motto on this buckle connect the set with the established German fire service rather than a conventional military branch. Its nickel plated brass construction, intact patent leather belt, full adjustment tab, and approximately 38 ½ inch extended length make it a useful representative example of German formal fire service equipment. The visible age cracking and stiffness are important condition considerations, but the set remains substantially complete and would suit a collection focused on German firefighting history, civil defense organizations, police related uniforms, or pre-war and WWII era public service equipment.
