Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original German Busch Rathenow Marschkompass II, a compact marching and sighting compass dating from the pre-WWII / WWII period. Manufactured by Emil Busch A.G. of Rathenow, this pattern is distinguished from the heavier brass-bodied Marschkompass I by its lightweight black Bakelite housing. Especially desirable, this example is accompanied by its fitted black leather carrying case.

This abbreviation stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, indicating that the design was protected as a German Reich registered utility model. It is a design registration marking rather than a military acceptance stamp.

The compass itself is the Marschkompass II pattern documented in period Busch material and surviving reference examples. Unlike the heavier brass-bodied Marschkompass I, the Modell II was constructed around a lightweight Bakelite housing, explaining the distinctly plastic-like feel of this example. Bakelite was an early thermosetting phenolic material widely used during the period for electrical, optical, communications, and military-related equipment because it could be molded into durable and dimensionally stable components.

Opening the compass reveals an exceptionally well-preserved cream-colored dial with the German cardinal directions N, O, S, and W, with O standing for Ost, or East. The black markings remain sharp and easily readable, and the magnetic needle and internal components present extremely well. A small graduated measuring scale is incorporated along the upper edge of the housing for use during map work.

The hinged sighting arrangement retains its circular mirror, allowing the compass indication to be observed while maintaining the instrument in a sighting position. This was a practical feature for taking bearings in the field. The large metal suspension ring is also present and has developed an attractive mellow patina that contrasts nicely with the glossy black Bakelite body.

Most importantly, this compass remains in functioning condition. The magnetic compass mechanism responds properly when the instrument is moved and oriented, and the movable ring still turns smoothly.

Cosmetically, the compass is in beautiful condition. The black Bakelite housing retains an excellent smooth finish with only scattered light scratches and handling marks. No major cracks, losses, or significant chips are visible. The Busch Rathenow marking on the cover remains strong, and the interior dial shows only minor age toning and a few small spots. The mirror and hinged components are intact, while the metal ring shows only expected age-related patination.

Also included is the fitted black leather carrying case, an especially appealing addition since many surviving Busch compasses are encountered loose. The case retains its black finish, stitching, metal press-stud fittings, retaining tabs, and leather attachment strap. It shows mild surface wear and dryness to the narrower strap sections, but these are entirely understandable signs of age.
